Happy 100th - Calgary Stampede!

These murals from the Calgary Stampede grounds helped celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Calgary Stampede, July 6 - 15, 2012 (photos recently in from my Alberta correspondent / mural chaser, Ramona Heikel)

These murals were only a portion of the public art on display at the Calgary Stampede this year. The Stampede Public Art site features many other pieces. Clicking on the images on that page will, in most cases, whisk you to pages of large photos and descriptions of the mural or sculpture featured.

Polo Match

"Sunday Afternoon at the Polo Match" by Stan Phelps, 1991 (Photo © 2007 by Ramona Heikel)
This is another mural in the High River Albert mural series. Below is the story of the mural as told in the Historic Murals Walking Tour brochure:

And that completes our abbreviated tour of the historic murals of High River. Thanks to Ramona Heikel for sending me the photos. And what fabulous murals they are! I have put a visit to High River on my bucket list so that I can view them for myself.

The first view of this mural gives us a feeling of its size.

When I look at the second, I have the urge to get out of the way of those galloping horses—a feeling achieved, I think, by the artist's perspective.

"Fort Spitzee"

A friend sent some photos of the historic murals in High River, Alberta. I'll be posting those in the next few weeks.

"Fort Spitzee" painted by Terry Winter, 1992 (photo © 2007 by Ramona Heikel)

Today's photo is a High River street scene with just a teaser of a mural ("Fort Spitzee" by Terry Winter, 1992).  Wouldn't you just love to walk between the buildings and see the whole thing?

Notice the Hudson Bay coat worn by the person in the painting. Hudson Bay blankets (white with characteristic green, red, yellow and blue stripes) were one of the items the Indians got in trade for beaver pelts.

A brochure on the High River web site gives walking tour directions to view all the town's murals and tells the story of each one. Below is the story of the Fort Spitzee mural from that brochure.

Easter Pysanka

I've been saving this beautiful Vegreville pysanka statue / weather vane for this season. Here it is today -- a week before Good Friday.

We stopped in Vegreville on our trip through Alberta last fall to photograph this largest pysanka in the world. It was put up in 1974 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the RCMP and to celebrate the cultural diversity of the Vegreville community. Hubby, standing at its base, gives an idea of its size.

Pysanka are traditional Ukrainian Easter eggs. They are made with chicken eggs using a batik process, where wax, funneled through the tip of an instrument that's as fine as a pen (stylus), provides a resist to many baths of dye. The end result is amazingly intricate and colorful.

My husband is of Ukrainian descent and his mom had her own collection of pysanka -- not made by her, though.

For a detailed description of the process and explanation of what the colors signify, visit "Art of Ukrainian Pysanka" by artist and muralist Patricia Buzo of -- Patricia's Palette.

For a collection of hand-made pysanka that spans years, check out Luba Petrusha's Annual Collections gallery. Click on each year (top) to view the collection of that year's pysanka. Absolutely stunning!

Airport Murals

A few years ago I had a wait at the Calgary airport. I believe that is where I photographed this interesting collage mural.

When I was back through Calgary a few weeks ago, I looked for it - but it was nowhere in sight.

Instead, this horsey mural was on display in the flight lounge area.

Murals of ambience

Restaurant murals add to the ambience. These aren't great shots, but you get the idea.

This street-front mural covers a wall of Dadeo's, a Cajun restaurant in Edmonton Alberta.

This pastoral / architectural ruins scene is from Stella's Tap and Tapas Bar on Commercial Drive in Vancouver. (Not sure what the guy on the left is doing - harvesting some of his brewsky?)

mosaic murals

This gorgeous mural titled "Trust" was put together by Lewis Lavoie and is a mosaic. It is made up of one-foot-square tiles, each of which is by a different artist and a picture on its own. It was unveiled at the Cochrane Ranche House, Cochrane Alberta, last week.

Check out the mural's web page. There you can view the individual pictures by clicking on the mosaic squares. Mr. Lavoie lets us in on some of the secrets of creating such a mural here.

The site links to other mosaic murals as well. Mr. Lavoie is presently working on a new mural called "King of Kings" and is posting his additions to it weekly.

Finally, here's a You-Tube of Mr. Lavoie, creating "The Creation of Adam" (about 2.5 min.).

Thanks to Joyce, who gave me the heads-up on these amazing works of art!
